Week 5

Faces in the Forest

This week, I revisited each character, refining their expressions and movements. I wanted their faces to tell stories of courage, doubt, and joy. The Guardian became a figure of quiet strength, embodying wisdom and protection, while Pippus, now alive, radiated a warmth that drew Emma and the readers alike into the story. Each character demanded attention, their designs becoming a reflection of their roles within the narrative.

Then there was the Bear—an embodiment of raw power. Fierce and untamed, its presence was meant to evoke both fear and awe. Unlike the other characters, it needed no softness, no comforting nuances. The Bear stood as a primal force of the enchanted world, its sheer might a reminder of the dangers that await in any grand adventure.

I leaned heavily on Cecile’s ability to convey emotion with minimal strokes. Her work whispered to me: Trust the simplicity. It was a lesson echoed in Helen Oxenbury’s illustrations, where a single tilt of a head or curve of a smile could convey an entire world.
